Things to do in Chichen Itza
The Kukulkan pyramid is the main attraction of this archaeological site. The pyramid is so well maintained and its architecture so iconic that it is well known world wide. During the spring equinox, an interesting phenomenon occurs when you see Kukulkan - the Mayan god known as the "feathered serpent" - descend down the temple stairs. This is actually an illusion created between the sun and the pyramid that brings together thousands of people each year.
Other must-see buildings are the observatory, the great ball game and the temple of warriors. You should also take time to visit the sacred cenote, where the Mayans would make sacrifices which accredited to benefit the prosperity of the city.
How to get to Chichen Itza?
The simplest way to experience this wonder of the world is by booking a tour. In Merida and the surrounding destinations on the peninsula, you will find dozens of operators who will take you to Chichen Itza.
If instead you decide to rent a car for your trip, the archaeological zone is only an hour and a half outside of Merida.
